I think SAFe has already taken off. It’s certainly the dominant model for agile here in Australia. On the other hand, TOGAF seems to be languishing. If the next major release of TOGAF is announced in 2018, it will have taken ten (10) years to produce. That’s a lifetime in internet years. Too long. Over those ten years, TOGAF has been diminishing in the global market.

Many would agree with you (I would) that the TOGAF specification is boring, sterile, and academic. It’s poorly written and poorly edited. This reflects the culture of The Open Group, which is bureaucratic and process-centric.

TOGAF is no longer a “technical” body of knowledge. But The Open Group is a technology organisation. TOGAF needs to break free of The Open Group. But I can’t think of any other organisation that would be interested in taking it on.
