Translation: the only way to get the US government to recognise that climate change is real is to cast it as a ‘threat to military security’. Not food, not survival, not clean water, not clean air, not agriculture, not floods, not quality of life, not the existence of humanity on the planet. It’s primarily a matter of ‘military security’. When we think of it as something that will impact our ability to wage war, then it becomes something real. Something we can no longer deny. Something we have to respond to. “Respond to” as in, after the fact. Not “do something immediately to help attenuate the causes of climate change”. Just “respond to the eventual aftermath”. So much for prudent governance.
